On April the third, in 1272, the first foundation stone was sent by the Pope Clément Clément IV former Archbishop of the town.
Since the period of Constantin, the nowadays cathedral is the fourth church built at this place. To avoid the destruction of a Roman rampart, the consuls of the city didn't agree any more with the works in the XIV-th century. The history proves they were right, because this rampart protected them from English attacks during the disturbed medieval times.

This cathedral in a Gothic style, possesses a splendid basilica, its vault of 41 metres is one of the highest in France ,after those of Amiens, Beauvais and Metz.
Upper the chapel of Annonciade, you will discover in a room which vault has a strange acoustic sound, illuminated manuscripts, religious silversmith's trade and a splendid Flemish tapestry, weaved with gold and silk dating from the end of the XV-th century, which represents the "Creation".
