It is in Fanjeaux that Saint Dominique giving battle to the Cathar based the religious order of the preaching brothers whose name is the same one. The house in which he lived, when he was named parish priest in 1214, still exists.
Saint Dominique based his first monastery, lower down the village, the "Senhador", which means "spot of the sign" raised to commemorate the vision he had of a fireball falling three times on Prouille, a small hamlet nearby Fanjeaux. This monastery has been destroyed during the revolution, another one was rebuilt. Prouille still remains a very important place for the Dominican.
