Some kilometres from Rennes le Château
, away, this small village will enchant you. Nearly unknown, it is situated in a magnificent surrounding with a quite particular medieval atmosphere.
You will be captured with the magnificent landscape in which forests are mixed with the surrounding meadows and the linings of the mountain with fault scarps.
Nowadays, the activities of Bugarach are essentially agriculture and tourism.
Talking about its history, this village had a great part in the economic development of the High Valley. During the war of Seven years (1756 in 1763), under the reign of King Louis XV, a part of the male population were taken prisoners.
Those villagers were transported towards Poland, in High Silesia, to deal with making hats. When they returned from Poland in 1804, they settled in Espéraza
, for practical reasons, to perpetuate their know-how and to use the means of their region.
And so were born the first manufactures of hats.
Don't miss something else to see : The stroll towards the waterfall of Mathieu and that one of Bugarach's (highest peak of Corbières 1230 metres high).
