The village of Saint-Papoul developed in the immediate neighborhoods of his abbey. In 1317, the village is called "town" then in 1367, a crossed(spent) agreement enters the bishop Pierre de Cros, the chapter and the consuls determined the construction of the fortifications.
By walking in the heart of the medieval village, the ancient bishop's palace from 1317 till 1791, one can again follow exactly the continuous line of the ramparts on which lean the constructions of the street of Ourmetto or impasse of Cers ; for the rest, the fortifications are flooded in the current batiments but their plan can be approximately reconstituted.
Alleys reveal traditional houses to facades with half-timberings and with corbelled constructions, a magnificent City hall with its hall of the XIX-th century, The House Lacapelle ancient hopital built in 1610).

The village was originally defended(forbidden) by two doors, still visible today. The first is situated from the current street of the City hall and the second, in contrast, said the east door, was built in custom(usage) of tower of the nurses and the episcopal prison.
