The castle of Aramon

The castle dominates the old village of Aramon and the river Rhone. It was built around a massive donjon dating from the thirteenth century as indicates it the used device, which is that one of Philippe Le Bel. Well situated in the defile of the Rhone named the Roque d' Acier, it probably was a part of the advances of Uzès .
It consisted in 1464 of a house and a tower. Nowadays only the tower stands : large square surmounted by crenels and by a turret, which dominates far off the country. The house has disappeared, some relics can still be seen : in the East some arches having been a part of the main courtyard and some bases which give to the actual terraces a romantic character.

the castle of Aramon

A part in the North was rebuilt in the eighteenth century in a very pure style, by the architect Bondon, that part being sheltered from ramparts. A stone bridge, in the place of the former drawbridge connects ramparts to the puech (rock on which is built a castle) where was planted a park of 7 hectares, with Mediterranean pronounced character as the magnificent pines of aleps the high cypress show it. Perched on rocky cape in front of the castle, it is, with its dark and heavily mass, one of the rare wooded spot in the whole region and a place particularly appreciated during visits.
An exhaustive brochure on the castle published by the association of the Friends of the castle of Aramon is available at the Office of Tourism.
