Being based in Ve century, the village of "Vallis Clara" took a big importance for the XIII-th century with the construction of the bridge, under the Pont-Saint-Esprit, to which the town owes its current name.
Being built from 1265 till 1309 in a particularly dangerous place, because of the very fast currents of the Rhone, the bridge measures 919 metres long.

It(he) was several times modified during the history and on 25 current, only arcs 19 are former(old). Formerly it(he) was closed in its(his) extremities by fortresses and two towers rose in the middle.
For the needs of the navigation, two arcs were replaced by an arc in cast iron in 1854, then by a suspension bridge in 1944 and, finally , by an arc in concrete more in accordance with the rest of the bridge. Finally, in 1860 , the bridge was widened.
