Cathedral of Maguelone

After the invasion of the Saracens, the city was completely destroyed in 737 by Charles Martel.

The inhabitants took refuge in the villages of the neighbourhoods and found very near from their ancient place a new one called Villeneuve-les-Maguelone .

In 1033, the bishop Arnaud orders that a cathedral to be built there, cathedral in which several popes stayed.

In 1536, the bishop's palace is transferred to the city of Montpellier . On the order of Richelieu, Maguelone is destroyed in 1632, only the cathedral remains.

The cathedral is restored by Frederic Fabrège who gives it back in 1875 its form of worship.
