The climate being nice there, more than 15.000 years ago people decided that this place in which there are a lot of caves and cliffs would become their hunting place. But in 806 Guillaume of Toulouse, who was the brother in arms of King Charlemagne, tired of the war, violence and power, gives up his present life to world to dedicate himself to God. He founds then the abbey of Gellone's
(eleventh and twelfth centuries) on the way to the city of Compostelle.
Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert adjusts the curves of the ground and the slow curves of the river Verdus. This village is considered as one of the most beautiful villages in France and deserves much more than a simple hasty visit. Please, hang about in alleys, go through the steep paths to discover that marvellous place.
