Gignac

Notre-Dame de Grâce

Being a place of exchange for tourists between the sea and the mountain the city called Gignac will attract you with the charm which comes from the countryside. Founded in the tenth century, the village has been fortified in the thirteenth century.

During wars of religion in the sixteenth century, the Catholics and the Protestants violently confronted each other. The church Notre-Dame has been twice destroyed. Then there was a lawful days during which the nobility asked mansions to be built.

Located on the river "the Hérault", at the town exit, on the road to the city called Lodève , the bridge of Gignac (see below) is a work of art dating from the eighteenth century. This magnificent building is included in the ATLAS of Science of the engineer besides the bridges from Salamanca in Spain or those of China. And this, although the works at it stopped suddenly.

After the revolution, this splendid work of 175 metres will be finished in 1806.

Don't forget while you're there to have a look at :

- relics of the past of ramparts of the thirteenth century.
- The church Notre-Dame de Grace of the seventeenth century.
- Bridge of Gignac dating from the eighteenth century, on the road to the city Lodève .
-The fair ofthe ass of Gignac, on the Ascension Day.
