In Roman Time, Maguelone knows a prosperous harbour activity. In the VI-th century, the island is the seat of a bishop's palace. In 737, Charles Martel destroys(annuls) the city.
The inhabitants take refuge then on lands and create the villa nova. In the XI-th century, the bishop Arnaud reconstructs the cathedral. She(it) will be saved(spared) during the destruction of the city in 1632 on order of Richelieu.
Sold as very national in the revolution, the cathedral is returned to the cult by Frédéric Fabrège in 1875.
