The Museum of Modern Art of the city of Céret
was created in 1950 in the ancient premises of the prison in order to collect the memory of the first half of the century of the going past and stay of artists.
From 1910, several artists stay and work in Céret. The period 1910-1913 is bearing the mark of the stay of the Cubists with Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Juan Gris, but also Manolo Hugué, Frank Burty Haviland, Auguste Herbin, Max Jacob...

Then between 1916 and 1940, other artists settle down in Céret among them Pierre Brune who was the initiator of the museum, Pinkus Krémègne, Chaim Soutine, André Masson, Marc Chagall, Pablo Gargallo, Apel, Fenosa...
These passing through were going on until nowadays to enrich considerably the collections of the museum. At the time of its creation, Picasso gave 53 works of art and Matisse 14 drawings. Today, the museum possesses 68 works of art signed Picasso.
The initial collection became little by little as it is today because of the gifts of the artists having stayed in Céret, and naturally will be opened from 1960's in the contemporary art.
Nowadays, the museum ,after its complete restructuring in 1992, shows to the public a reading of its historic collection and a strong opening in contemporary art enriched with several gifts or deposits: deposits of State or of collectors among whom Pierre Restany, Yves Michaud and Jean-Pierre Alis.
The temporary exhibitions of the museum are bound to the restructuring of collections and also to the reading of the stays of all artists in Céret.
