Originally, this fortified place was used by the Phocéens as early as the sixth century before JC. Later the Romans built a citadel where was built, in the twelfth century, the present castle.
This imposing monument built so near from the sea, between both present ports (Port Amont - upstream and Port Aval - downstream) was at first dominated by the Spaniards (Kings of Aragon and Majorca from 1276 to 1344).

In 1907, it even gets the title of Castle of the Knights Templar. Its final sight is due to a man called Vauban, who after the French - Spanish wars and the treaty of Pyrenees asked for adding the outside surrounding wall.
The French army occupied the Castle till the end of the Second World war and since that time it was reorganized to receive temporary and permanent exhibitions.
