Abbey Sainte-Marie



Arles-Sur-Tech possesses the most ancient Abbey Benedictine of the region Catalonia.


Built in the year 778, probably by King Charlemagne, has got an apse directed to the West, which is surprising !...


A real masterpiece of the Romanic art, you will be captivated by its inside in all dressed stones, by its vaults from the twelfth century, its very beautiful furniture's, its nice little chapels : in one of them there is a baroque altarpiece and another one in which you will see "misteris" (images of the Christ which are carried by men during the procession of "Sanch", at night of Good Friday, by the black penitents).


Joined side by side, there is an admirable Gothic convent built in the twelfth century which is and extremely well preserved.


It is also a real masterpiece having in one of its rooms, the Museum of the Iron, which formerly was a very important expedient for the prosperity of the village.
