The crypt is the most ancient part(party) of the Abbey, which was based by the count Guifred Cabreta. The church was dedicated in 1009. The capitals(big tops) of the convent date XII-th and XIII-th centuries.

In 1428, the Abbey is seriously damaged by an earthquake. Abandoned by the monks in 1783, she(it) falls in ruins.


From 1902 till 1932, Mgr. de Carsalade of the Bridge, bishop of Perpignan , having acquired(bought back) ruins, raises(finds) them partially by collecting all the elements scattered in the region.


From 1952 till 1971, Dom Bernard de Chabannes finishes the restoration of the Abbey and restores there the spiritual life.

At present even, important works are achieved, thanks to the generosity of each.


Saint-Martin-du-Canigou's abbey is a place where the religious life is maintained. The liturgy is celebrated there by a catholic monastic community.

As a consequence, the visit takes place in the atmosphere of a silent meditation. You can visit all the places presenting a cultural and architectural interest.
