Aquarium of the Laboratory Arago

Opened in 1883 , the aquarium of the city of Banyuls-sur-Mer is one of the most ancient aquarium in France, and the main sorts of fishes and invertebrates of the Bay of Lion are there.

The purpose of its existence is to let people know the local marine animal-life in an environment as close as possible with the reality.


Animals are presented in a set with 40 tanks. Vessels and divers of the station took most of the animals.

A very beautiful collection of birds, rich with more than 250 sorts, is presented at the entrance of the aquarium.

Offered by the family Sauvy-Rendu, the collection was gathered at the end of the last century from different one's in the entire department. Many one's exposed have totally disappeared from the region or are in nearing disappearance.

The aquarium is the public shop window of the laboratory of Arago that is one of the biggest centres of navy biology. This oceanographic observatory has two purposes, one of the research and the other of teaching.

It organizes much training of navy biology and zoology and welcomes the scientists who want to work on the fauna or on the local flora.

It is regularly the centre of international confabs.
