Elne

Elne is located between Perpignan and Argelès-sur-Mer . The name results from the empress Hélène, the mother of the Emperor Constantin Le Grand.

This city with Spanish accents, surrounded with ramparts, is the oldest city in the region Roussillon. It already existed at the time of the Iberians and was called "Illiberis".
Closer to our times, this charming village was the Episcopal see soon as middle of the sixth century till the beginning of the seventeenth century.

General view

Elne is a historical city with its relics of the past and the beauty of its monuments such as its splendid Cathedral saint-Eulalie and Sainte-Julie , built in the eleventh century, its magnificent cloister (twelfth century), its museums of Archaeology and History.

Elne is also a city of art with its museum dedicated to the child of the land, whose name is Étienne Terrus (1857-1922), and a lot of art galleries. It is also a charming landscape where apricot trees, peach trees, vineyards and Pyrenees look like a small paradise, Catalan naturally.

For the lovers of the bath towel, not any problem because Saint-Cyprien beach is 6 kilometres away.
