The history of Castellane, is quite at the same moment enlivened and strewed with often painful events (invasion Saracen, religious war), and goes back up(raises) to the most put off times.

The village changed several times name (oppidum of Ducelia, Roman city of Salinae, city of Petra Castellana) and of place before becoming established definitively at feet of an abrupt(steep) cliff on the right bank of Verdon.

Halfway between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea, in the heart of the Geologic Reserve of High Provence, in the Regional Natural reserve of Verdon, the city stage on Napoleon's road and door of the famous Gorges(breasts) of Verdon.
