The building(ship) which shelters the collections of the Annonciade was at first a famous chapel, built between 1510 and 1558 by the brotherhood of Penitent White.
The Annonciade is an exceptional museum. It(he) collects some some of the most beautiful testimonies of the events which admitted Saint-Tropez
to the art history.
The homogeneity of its permanent collection and its summery exhibitions with subject, is an uncommon example of France (and in the world), especially if one considers the concentration, in a so small space, of major leaders of works for the history of the French painting and the innovative period of the XIX-th end and the beginning of XX-th centuries.
Originally, it is the will to keep(preserve) on the spot the testimonies of the passage in Saint-Tropez of the biggest painters of the XX-th century that incited Henri Person and André Turin to establish(constitute) a public collection: Museon Tropelen, which received of Paul Signac a generous and effective support.
Person manages to establish(constitute) a not unimportant collection, at first presented in the rooms of the City hall. The indifference of the Municipality of then for these clothes(canvases) will incite the widow of Henri Person to look for a decent showroom. In 1935, she(it) addresses a long-time friend, Georges Grammont, rich manufacturer and lit(enlightened) collector, who has just settled down in Saint-Tropez.
Grammont obtains from the city the liberation of the superior floor of the chapel of Annonciade, which he makes fit out at his expense. It(he) increases the collection of the Museon Tropelen by the loan of tables(pictures) belonging to him(her).
The Annonciade has the rare privilege to present to his(her) guests of the exceptional paintings in the light where some were conceived.
