Create in 1981, the museum developed thanks to the support of the association of the friends of the museum, which allowed the construction of both first extensions and the doubling of the initial surface, to carry(wear) her(it) about 2000 m2. The project of a third extension is for the study.
Museum of history, sciences and techniques, of arts and military traditions, but also of human adventures, the museum of the troops of Marine presents an evocation illustrated as well by very diversified museum possessions as by archives or with iconographic documents.
The history of the weapon which gave its colonial empires in France and which is, today , the weapon of the specialists of the actions amphibians and of the service overseas, serves as vital lead in the history of Overseas France evoked in broad outline.
The museum also proposes cultural activities: an annual cycle of conferences, temporary exhibitions, a lounge(show) of painting in autumn.
Finally, the museum is opened to the historians and to the researchers. Since November, 1996, the centre of studies and history of the overseas troops is classified deposit(warehouse) of intermediate archives of the Ministry of the Defence.
Memory(report) of Overseas France, the Chetom holds(detains) a collection(fund) specialized 10 000 books(pounds) and 800 boxes of archives, which can be consulted on the spot.
