This municipality owes its name to a former(ancient) small pond, reclaimed towards the end of the 18-th century. In its place, is today the tourist information office ( ancient(former) station). The seaside formed at the time of unstable dunes of black sand, was inhospitable and the men(people) settled down so in the heights.
In 1862, the opening of the railroad line gave a first impulse in the bottom, because the station settled down there. Towards the end of the 19-th century, one had the idea to stabilize the dunes of black sands by planting Filaos. This experiences(experiments) was resumed by waterworks and Forests which(who) will plant millions of trees in this zone.

The municipality of the Etang-Salé is bicéphale * (in two heads) : Etang-Salé-les-Hauts and Etang-Salé-les-Bains with its beach of black sand on 3 km.
